Saudi shoppers put SR 37.6 billion through mada cards in July 2026 alone, 11.8% more than June's SR 33.6 billion and 26% more than the SR 29.8 billion of July 2025, according to the Saudi Central Bank's monthly bulletin. Almost all of that demand lands on one of three storefront platforms: Salla, Zid or Shopify. Most founders choose between them in week one, on the basis of a monthly price, and that choice then quietly sets their payment costs, their compliance workload, the quality of their measurement and how hard it will be to leave. Here is the comparison priced out, with every figure taken from a published page.
01 · The fieldThree platforms, and what the store counts really say
Salla and Zid are Saudi platforms built around the Saudi stack: Arabic and right to left by default, local payment methods and carriers, invoicing that tracks the tax authority's requirements. Salla's own page lists mada, STC Pay, Apple Pay, Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Tabby and Tamara as supported at checkout. Shopify is the global default that happens to be available in the Kingdom. The gap in scale is narrower than the funding headlines suggest, and the two Saudi platforms are not interchangeable with each other either.
Salla publishes 68k+ active merchants, more than $13 billion in processed sales, 900+ integrations and 200+ shipping partners. Zid publishes 13,500+ merchants and more than 10 billion SAR in sales through its stores. Independent crawls read lower, because they count live storefronts rather than signed accounts: on 23 October 2026, StoreLeads counted 26,284 live Salla stores and 14,523 live Zid stores. Both sets of figures are directional. Platforms count accounts generously, crawlers miss stores behind custom setups.
Momentum
For Q3 2026 StoreLeads recorded Zid growing 43.6% quarter on quarter and 22% year on year, against 4.5% quarter on quarter for Salla. Zid is the smaller base, and at the moment the faster one.
Concentration
The same crawl attributes 89.9% of Zid stores (13,063) to Saudi Arabia, against 30.0% of Salla stores (7,894). StoreLeads describes its country and age detection as heuristic, so read the Salla share as a floor, not a fact.
What it means
Both Saudi platforms are past the stage where the tool you need simply does not exist. Neither has Shopify's depth. Choose on fit and cost, not on a fear of being too early.
What each platform charges, from the published pages
| Platform | Entry | Mid tier | Top of the public range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salla | Basic, free | Plus, SAR 990 a year | Pro, SAR 2,990 a year, then a custom Special plan |
| Zid | Starter, free | Rise, SAR 99 a month | Growth, SAR 299 a month, then Professional on request |
| Shopify | Basic, $27 a month, or $19 billed annually | Grow, $72 a month, or $54 billed annually | Advanced, $399 a month, Plus from $2,300 a month |
Salla advertises 16% off for annual billing. Shopify's Saudi pricing page quotes in dollars, so your subscription carries currency risk that a riyal plan does not. Read the subscription line, though, and you have read the smallest part of the bill.
Neither Salla's nor Zid's public plans page lists a per transaction commission, and the third party comparisons circulating online contradict each other on the rates. Do not plan your margin from a blog post, including this one. Ask each platform for the commission that applies to your plan in writing, and get the gateway's mada and card rates on the same email thread before you launch.
Shopify in Saudi Arabia runs without Shopify Payments
Shopify waives its platform transaction fee when you process payments through Shopify Payments. Shopify Payments is live in 47 countries and regions. The UAE is on that list. Saudi Arabia is not. A Saudi registered merchant therefore connects a third party gateway and pays Shopify's third party provider fee on top of whatever that gateway charges: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus.
Put a number on it. A store doing SAR 500,000 a month on the Basic plan pays SAR 10,000 a month in Shopify platform fees alone, SAR 120,000 a year, before a single riyal of gateway cost. That is roughly 40 times Salla's Pro subscription for the same year. Climbing the plans buys the percentage down, which is why the real Shopify question in the Kingdom is not Basic versus Grow, it is at what revenue the fee tier pays for itself.
None of which makes the platform the main driver of your margin. Your payment mix does more: the share of orders on mada, the fees on Tabby and Tamara, and the refusal rate on cash on delivery all move contribution per order far more than SAR 990 a year. Our BNPL report covers the first and our COD playbook the second.
04 · ComplianceZATCA, and the deadline sitting in February 2027
On 24 July 2026, ZATCA published the criteria for wave 25 of phase two e-invoicing. Any resident taxpayer whose VAT taxable revenue exceeded SAR 187,500 during 2022, 2023, 2024 or 2025 must integrate with the Fatoora platform from 1 February 2027. At that threshold the mandate stops being an enterprise problem: a store averaging roughly SAR 16,000 a month of taxable revenue in any one of those four years is in scope, and the trigger is historical, so trading down since then does not exempt you.
This is the clearest operational split between the three platforms. On Salla and Zid, Arabic invoicing and tax authority compliance are platform features maintained by a Saudi company whose whole merchant base depends on them staying current. On Shopify they are yours to solve, through an app, an accounting integration or your finance team, and the structured invoice format, cryptographic stamping and clearance mechanics of phase two are not a theme setting. If you are registering the business at the same time, the wider sequence is in our Saudi operator's guide.
05 · AppsDepth of ecosystem against fit of ecosystem
Shopify's advantage here is not close. The Shopify App Store carried 21,509 live public apps on 31 May 2026. Salla publishes 900+ integrations. If your growth stack depends on a particular subscription engine, a particular reviews tool or a headless front end, Shopify is the only one of the three where the answer is yes by default.
The counter argument is fit. 76.6% of Shopify apps are English only, and the local layer the Saudi platforms ship natively, domestic payment methods, Saudi carriers, Arabic right to left themes, compliant invoices, is work you assemble and then maintain on Shopify. There is no free lunch in either direction: Shopify sells you optionality and bills you in integration labour, the Saudi platforms sell you fit and bill you in ceiling.
What actually matters for acquisition is narrower than either sales pitch. You need clean browser and server side events reaching Meta, TikTok and Snapchat, UTMs that survive the checkout, and order level data you can join to ad spend by day. All three platforms can do that. None of them does it correctly out of the box, and in the accounts we manage, bad attribution turns out to be a tracking setup problem far more often than a platform limitation. The benchmarks you would be measuring against sit in our Gulf Meta Ads report, and the organic side in our Arabic SEO guide.
06 · LaterCross border, and the question a buyer will ask
Salla lists 40+ languages, 15+ currencies and payments from 79+ countries, and operates across Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman. Zid lists Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Egypt and Syria. Both are Gulf capable. If the plan is a Gulf brand selling to the Gulf, that is enough platform. If the plan is a brand selling to Europe or the United States out of Riyadh, Shopify's multi currency and multi market tooling is a real reason to pay the fee tier.
The question nobody asks in week one is what happens in year three. Changing platform later is a replatform: themes, apps, URLs, review history, subscription customers, historical order data. Acquirers inspect it, because it prices in as risk. Our report on how GCC brands get valued covers what diligence really opens. Decide now whether you are optimising for the next 12 months or for the sale, and be honest with yourself about which.
07 · DecisionHow we would choose
Salla. The largest local ecosystem, the broadest shipping and payment coverage out of the box, and a subscription small enough to be irrelevant to your P&L.
Zid. Nearly all of its merchant base is in the Kingdom, it is the faster grower of the two right now, and its roadmap is written for Saudi operations rather than for the region in general.
Shopify. Accept the third party provider fee as the price of the app ecosystem and cross border tooling, and budget the Arabic, payment and invoicing work as a project, not a checkbox.
One rule cuts through all of it: pick the platform that removes the constraint that is actually binding you this year. A brand that cannot ship to Dammam reliably does not need a headless front end. A brand whose entire growth model runs on a subscription engine will not be saved by a cheaper subscription. Write down the constraint first, then pick.
08 · IncentivesWhy your agency does not care which one you pick
Ask a retainer agency which platform to choose and you will usually get the one they already know, because the fee is the same either way. Ask an agency paid a percentage of ad spend and the platform barely registers, because nothing in that contract gets better when your checkout converts or your invoicing passes an audit. Both get paid in full on a month where the gateway fee quietly ate your margin, and a 30 day notice clause means neither has to be there when the consequences land in year two.
BIMO is paid a share of the profit plus a minority equity stake, set after an audit. That changes which questions get asked in week one. We have run 16 brands of our own and worked with 36 client brands, and the pattern is consistent: platform fees and payment mix decide more of the P&L than the ad account does, which is why we price the gateway and the compliance work before touching the Saudi acquisition plan. If that is the structure you would rather have on your side, the Growth Partner programme explains how it works.
The platform argument is usually fought on the wrong number. The subscription is the smallest line in the comparison, and the Shopify third party provider fee, your gateway rates and the compliance work you take on are the largest. For a brand whose customers are in the Kingdom, Salla or Zid removes work that Shopify hands you as a project, and the Saudi ecosystems are no longer thin enough to be a real constraint. For a brand selling across borders from day one, Shopify is worth its fee tier. Across more than $30 million in ad spend we have managed, we have never seen a brand lose because of its storefront platform. We have seen plenty lose on payment fees and refusals they never modelled.
Questions founders ask us
Is Shopify Payments available in Saudi Arabia?
No. Shopify Payments is live in 47 countries and regions, and Saudi Arabia is not among them while the UAE is. Saudi merchants connect a third party gateway and therefore pay Shopify's third party provider fee, which is 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus.
Is Salla or Zid cheaper than Shopify?
On the subscription line the Saudi platforms are far cheaper: Salla lists Plus at SAR 990 a year and Pro at SAR 2,990 a year, Zid lists Rise at SAR 99 a month, while Shopify Basic is $27 a month. The real difference sits in the transaction fees, so get each platform's commission and your gateway's mada and card rates in writing before comparing.
Which platform handles ZATCA e-invoicing best?
Salla and Zid treat Arabic invoicing and tax authority compliance as platform features they are obliged to keep current for every Saudi merchant. On Shopify it is your responsibility, through an app, an accounting integration or your finance team. Wave 25 brings in anyone whose VAT taxable revenue passed SAR 187,500 in 2022, 2023, 2024 or 2025, with integration from 1 February 2027.
Does Salla or Zid have enough apps to run a serious brand?
Yes for a Gulf focused brand. Salla publishes 900+ integrations and 200+ shipping partners, which covers shipping, payments, invoicing, marketing and reporting. Shopify carried 21,509 live public apps in May 2026, so if your model depends on one specific tool, check it exists before you commit.
Can I sell internationally on Salla or Zid?
Within reason. Salla lists 40+ languages, 15+ currencies and payments from 79+ countries and operates across the GCC, and Zid covers Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Egypt and Syria. For a brand whose growth plan is Europe or the United States, Shopify's multi market tooling is still the stronger option.
How hard is it to move platforms later?
Hard enough to be a real decision. A migration means rebuilding themes and apps, mapping URLs, and carrying over review history, subscription customers and historical order data. Acquirers look at it as risk during diligence, so choose with year three in mind, not only month one.
